This is in response to the problem of the missing gnome panel in Ubuntu Gutsy, due to the recent updates.
Solution:
1. Right-click on the desktop and create a launcher with "xterm" as the command.
2. Double-click on the launcher to open a terminal window.
3. Key in "gnome-panel" as the command and hit enter.
The panel will reappear in the same condition before it disappeared. You'll only have to do this once.
