US Navy To Embrace OSS

The Department of the Navy has adopted a new policy making it a requirement that OSS (open source software) be considered in every software acquisition the Navy makes.

Previously, the misonception that OSS neither qualifies as COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) nor GOTS (government off-the-shelf) software had hindered the Navy's ability to fully utilize OSS. Now, the Navy will treat OSS as COTS when it meets the definition of a commercial item.
