"A former Border Patrol agent, now behind bars, has been severely beaten by illegal immigrant fellow inmates. An advocate is calling for protection for the ex-border security officer, who was arrested, tried and convicted for his actions regarding the pursuit and shooting of an illegal immigrant drug smuggler.
As a result of the assault, Ramos sustained "significant injuries to his back, shoulder, arms and head, and was bleeding from his ear," Elliot says. He also notes with concern that it may have been up to 48 hours before the wounded inmate received any medical treatment for his injuries.
Although Ramos is now in isolation, the Grassfire.org spokesman is calling for the former Border Patrol officer to be "protected and released." Meanwhile, more than 50 U.S. Congressmen have called on President Bush to pardon both Ramos and Compean.
Sadly, the brutal attack on Ramos comes as no surprise to the people at Grassfire.org, Elliot says. Nevertheless, he notes, "we are shocked and outraged, and we are calling on citizens across this country to rise up and say 'enough is enough.' It's time for these two agents to be protected, to be pardoned by this president."
The lives of Ramos and Compean "are literally at risk at this point," Elliot continues. And in light of the situation, he adds, President Bush "needs to take immediate action" on their behalf."
