I had a hard time getting my system to shut down properly when I installed Ubuntu on an old desktop previously running on CentOS.
Apparently, the problem disappeared after I edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include "acpi=force" in the kernel boot options.
*Sigh*.....I should have stuck to CentOS. Nah, just kidding. :-)
