Internet "Tsunami"

This is what you get when Ubuntu 9.04 is released with a bug in a popular Linux application.







It was worse a couple of days ago, when I observed that there was somebody accessing that post almost every minute!

But I really can't complain, cos I'm not paying a cent to host this blog.

Google, thanks for footing the bill for this "tsunami". It's only fair, cos you were the one who sent it here. :-)

See, I did a check on Google Analytics and discovered the main "culprit" was Google. There are two other major "culprits": The Italian Official Ubuntu forum and a Portugese Linux site.

Anyway, thanks for the support, fellas.

Unbanned in China

It seems that I may have to eat crow. Google Analytics is right after all - this blog is getting traffic from China.

I asked someone residing in Canton (where most of my Chinese friends reside) to try accessing my blog, and apparently, he had no problems doing so.

Now, that's strange, as none of the SEOs have informed me of China's lifting of the ban on the blogger.com / blogspot.com domain. I suppose they must have been sleeping. :-)

Anyway, I can be assured that all my friends in China can now access my blog - at least for now...

Lol. This is funny!

Google Analytics reports that this blog has traffic coming from China. I was looking at the Google Analytics referrers list when I noticed that baidu.com sent a visitor. Now, I was pretty certain that this was one of those referrer spammers, so I did a check on baidu.com. It turns out that this blog is listed in the search engine after all. A check on other Google Analytics reports revealed that there had been 13 visitors from China for the past month.

Amazing, but this is erroneous. Everyone knows that the entire blogspot.com domain is banned in China.

I know for certain that this "traffic" is made-up, because all my Chinese MySpace friends residing in the People's Republic of China swear that they can't access this blog.

Report: Online Retail Sales Could Rise to US$204B

The National Retail Federation has published its report for 2008 online retail sales, predicting that it could rise up to 17% over last year and for the first time crack $200 billion.

The organization's annual survey from shop.org showed that $204 billion is expected in Internet-based purchases this year, despite a slowing economy.

"From higher shipping costs to changes in consumer shopping habits, online retailers are not immune to the current economic climate," says Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org. "But the fact that online sales will increase substantially this year demonstrates the resilience of the channel and is a testament to the value and convenience most customers find when shopping online."

While almost anyone who has been involved in online marketing for a period of time knows this, Matt's article serves as a great little reality check for those who are new to the game.

What Have I Done To Deserve This?

When I stopped posting photos of Hong Kong girls, the perverts disappeared from my "Alexa radar" completely. But as soon as I started posting those photos again, they reappeared in horrifying numbers, and pumped up my page views as they leeched my photos with their spyware-infected PCs (which explains why they have the Alexa toolbar installed).

What have I done to deserve this? May their Windoze PCs crash soon and wipe out all their porn files.

China Redirecting Google Searches To Baidu

It appears that China is hijacking Google, Yahoo and Microsoft searches, and redirecting them to Baidu.

It’s not very sporting of them to do so, but I'm not surprised they did just that. :P

I've been with Google Analytics for about a week now. Search engine generated blog traffic amounts to only 1.95% of my total blog traffic, but I think it's the most informative.

It seems that my blog is optimised for selling Linux panties. :P

Why Alexa Traffic Ranking May Be Misleading

It has to do with how the sample is collected and the sample size.

According to Alexa, only browsers with the Alexa toolbar are taken as part the sample. Trained statisticians will know that this constitutes a selection bias. To make matters worse, the number of Alexa users compared to the total web surfing population is mediocre, at best. When the sample size is too small, it may lead to inaccurate results.

These deficiencies could very well mean a great difference between Alexa's representation and actuality.

To illustrate, suppose U have a website with ten thousand visitors but only one of them has the Alexa toolbar installed. Alexa will take it as though U had only one visitor. Now, suppose U have a second website with only a thousand visitors but all of them have the Alexa toolbar installed - Alexa will account for one thousand visitors!

Clearly, if we rely on Alexa's representation, the second site will outrank the first site, even though we know this is the exact opposite of reality.
