Pencil - 2D Animation Software

Pencil is a cross-platform and easy-to-use 2D drawing/ animation software. Pencil lets you create traditional hand-drawn animations (cel, cartoons, etc) using both bitmap and vector graphics.

Pencil is not intended to mimic web-oriented vector-based animation software such as Flash. Its main purpose is to make traditional animation. Neither does Pencil try to rival commercial software targeting the professional animation sector. Pencil is intended to be a simple program enabling anyone to make 2D animation.

This software is great if you want to rough out an animation before creating it in 3D, or if you just want to animate in 2D. Pencil is free and open source.

Refocus - Plug-in for The Gimp

During image processing operations such as scanning and scaling, images tend to get blurry. The blurred impression of these images is due to the fact that image pixels are averaged with their neighbors. Blurred images don't have sharp boundaries and look as though they have been taken with an unfocussed camera.

Refocus is a plug-in for the Gimp (the GNU Image Manipulation Program). This plug-in attempts to "refocus" the image, using a technique called FIR Wiener filtering. The traditional technique for sharpening images is to use unsharp masking. Refocus generally produces better results than unsharp masking.

The plug-in comes with a preview that helps you select the best parameters.

How To Steal Photos on Flickr

I found the photo I needed (for offline use) but unfortunately, the photo had been "protected" by Flickr and I could only save a spaceball.gif file. But that wasn't a problem, really. *Evil grin*

Here's an extremely easy way to steal or leech "protected" photos on Flickr:

1. Use Firefox to go to the Flickr page where the photo resides and hit Ctrl-U. This will bring up the page source window.

2. Hit Ctrl-F, key "jpg" (without the quotes) into the Find field and hit Return/Enter until you see something that goes like http://farm1.static.flickr.com/.... under the "noscript" section.

3. Copy and paste the URL into your URL field.

4. That's it. You can now save the Flickr photo. :-)
